A number of our volunteers worked as first responders in New York City during Hurricane Irene in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. After seeing the damage caused by the storm and seeing the number of people displaced, it was evident that there has to be better systems in place to reduce the effects of natural disasters in coastal areas like Far Rockaway. A community organization called “Ready Rockaway” was formed to prepare the Rockaway community for such emergencies. Their plan of disaster resiliency and response, as well as their collaborations with other organizations like World Cares will help lessen the impacts of future disasters.
On January 16th, 2020, World Cares will be hosting a training event in Far Rockaway. The event will require the attendance of volunteers to help create a disaster response plan with the help of Ready Rockaway and The Black 6 Project.
The Black 6 Project is seeking volunteers with military backgrounds and first responders from the EMS, fire department, or law enforcement background. Volunteers will attend this event and learn the disaster response for the Rockaways when the next natural disaster or all-hazards conditions should hit.
